Kitchen Lighting Tips

Since there are many tasks performed in the kitchen your lighting should be functional first, and then decorative. Bright, well-diffused, evenly spaced lighting sources from the ceiling are a dependable way to make sure all open spaces are free of annoying shadows or glare. The ceiling light should also illuminate the inside of the kitchen cabinets. Be careful to space your recessed lighting to provide lighting on the cabinets and counters.

Work areas need task lighting. Undercabinet fixtures make great task lights. You can also use recess or surface spot lights over sinks, range tops and breakfast bars.

Low profile fluorescents can be used for selected task areas such as a menu-planning desk. Kitchens used for dining and snacking can use more decorative lighting to carry out the theme. You might want the overhead general light and the decorative chain-hung for the eating area to be of the same family of lights.
